This month we're proud to announce the winner of October's Trilby Misso Community Hero award - Toowoomba local, Sheriden Wright
Sheriden Wright is a lifelong Toowoomba local and has dedicated herself to the young people of the city through dance. After closing her formal dance school in 2001 she started Kiyua Performing Arts in 2004, which is a free school teaching dance and drama to disadvantaged young people. It was one of these young people, Tony Rehn, that nominated Sheriden for the award, and he himself now volunteers at Kiyua Performing Arts and is a pivotal part of the centre's survival.
Through dance, the kids have an outlet to express themselves, and allows them to turn their energy into something positive. When The Chronicle contacted Sheriden, she said that the average age of the kids is around 15, and has become a foundation for some of these young people to learn some skills, and then in turn, become a mentor themselves.
The dance company works each year towards its annual dance recital, culminating in a performance at the Empire theatre, which was on this past Saturday. From all reports, it was a great success and Sheriden is very proud of the kids and the hard work they've put in all year!
Sheriden doesn't think of herself as a "hero" at all, and was completely unaware that she was even nominated. When asked how she felt, she said that she was very surprised, and didn't do it for anything other than the kids. This is why Trilby Misso and we here at The Chronicle, feel she deserves the October Trilby Misso Community Hero Award.
If you know someone who deserves to be recognised in their community for work they've done, or achievements you feel they've not be recognised for, then jump online here to nominate them for the November Trilby Misso Community Hero Award.
