Comedian Geraldine Hickey has made the surprise revelation that she will undergo full breast removal surgery.
Hickey, 45, however said she “very much” identifies as female and will go under the knife to feel more comfortable with her body.
“I’ve got an appointment with the surgeon when I get out, I am getting mine removed,” Hickey said on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!
“I have got s**t boobs, they are really big … they are just so heavy and I am just so sick of having back and shoulder pain and stuff. The idea of being able to go for a run and then run straight into a body of water is my dream.
“Obviously with what I am getting done is, some would call it ‘top surgery’ but I am not calling it that because it is complete removal. It is definitely happening, it is just that (seeing a surgeon) is the first part of it.”
Hickey made the claim in unseen footage that didn’t make it to air on I’m A Celebrity, prior to reality star Samantha Moitzi being eliminated from the competition on Sunday night.
The show is filmed in South Africa with contestants living in a jungle camp and competing in various challenges to win money for their chosen charities.
“I don’t identify as non-binary at all, I very much identify as a woman,” she said.
Moitzi, of Married At First Sight fame, said: “I feel so grateful that Geraldine felt comfortable enough to come and have a chat with me about the fact that she is going to have surgery soon. I also found it really interesting the type of surgery that she is going to have.”
Melbourne-based Hickey is top billing on the comedy circuit here and abroad.
She has appeared on TV shows ranging from The Project to Have You Been Paying Attention? and Hughesy, We Have A Problem. She also appeared on comedy series, Metro Sexual.
Hickey’s wife, Catherine Bateman, is a marriage celebrant.
In another conversation that did make it to air on Tuesday, Hickey explained that she “is not fussed with pronouns”.
“I’ve spent most of my life telling people that I am a woman … and I do feel like a woman but also at times I don’t feel girly,” she explained to fellow contestant Reggie Bird.
“Like I never wear a dress, that feels weird. I reckon if I was born maybe 10 years later, I would probably call myself non-binary.”
I’m A Celebrity airs on Channel 10 Sunday to Thursday nights.
