Terri Irwin has opened up about the grief she still feels every day, 18 years after the death of her husband Steve Irwin.

The Australian zookeeper, conservationist and TV personality, known as the “Crocodile Hunter” thanks to his hit show, died on 4 September 2006 aged 44 while filming in the Great Barrier Reef after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb.

His death was mourned around Australia and the world, and now Ms Irwin has revealed that she still struggles with the loss, and detailed helpful advice for others who are dealing with the death of family members and loved ones.

Speaking on Wiggle Talk, a podcast for parents, Ms Irwin said: “Eventually, when they say time heals all wounds it doesn’t. But eventually it changes it and it walks next to you”.

“It’s always there and you have to acknowledge your grief but it’s a companion rather than an all consuming feeling.

“If you can focus on that and focus on, there’s some grief you really never get over, it’s OK. You’re going to be OK and your kids will be OK. The sun will shine again. It may not shine as bright but it will shine again, that’s what you need to hold on to.”

Her powerful comments generated discussion online, with many praising Ms Irwin for her raw honesty.

One viewer wrote: “Terri is absolutely one of my favourite women in the public eye. You can see how amazing her kids turned out and the positivity she spreads without trying too hard. A beautiful, genuine woman whose words today will no doubt help others going through the same battles”.

Another fan responded: “When my daughter died, the sun did eventually shine again, but like Terri said, it won’t ever shine as bright. But we always keep our baby present, we celebrate her birthdays, and we celebrate her at Christmas, and Mother’s Day”.

Another added: “Oh, I cry whenever the Irwin’s talk about Steve. One death of a man I didn’t know, that I will never get over”.

Just last week, Ms Irwin posted a photo on social media of her with Steve writing: “Love lives on”.
