Prince Harry is ready to talk to King Charles after approving a peace summit between their aides.
The King’s youngest son is said to have “given his blessing” for the talks in London involving two members of his PR team plus the King and Queen’s director of communications, The Sun reports.
In an indication the battle of the royal brothers is not waning, Prince William’s staffers were not involved in the London summit.
The California-based royal is next due to visit the UK in September for the annual WellChild events, opening up the prospect of meeting his father for the first time in 18 months.
In a shock development, the top aides met at a private members’ club in London in a move that is being hailed as the first step towards a “rapprochement process” between Prince Harry and the royal family, according to the Mail on Sunday.
Meredith Maines, Prince Harry’s new California-based chief communications officer, was joined at the meeting by Liam Maguire, who runs the UK-based PR operation for Harry and wife Meghan Markle, and Tobyn Andreae, communications secretary for King Charles.
The trio met at the Royal Over-Seas League, near King Charles’ residence, Clarence House.
A source told the Mail on Sunday: “There’s a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in years.
“There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks. There were things both sides wanted to talk about.”
The source described the summit as only the “first step towards reconciliation between Harry and his father, but at least it is a step in the right direction”.
They added: “Everyone just wants to move on and move forward now. It was finally the right time for the two sides to talk.”
One potential opportunity for a reconciliation is the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.
Prince Harry is believed to have sent email invitations to Buckingham Palace in the hope that advance notice would give the King time to fit the event into his schedule.
The shock summit, which shows that both King Charles and Prince Harry are keen to move beyond the current stalemate, came weeks after the Duke of Sussex insisted in a lengthy BBC interview that he wanted to reconcile with his family.
But he admitted that his father would not speak to him and that he did not know how much longer the King had to live.
“There’s no point in continuing to fight any more,” he said. “Life is precious.”
Prince Harry added: “Forgiveness is 100 per cent a possibility because I would like to get my father and brother back.”
