Documents related to Prince Harry’s US visa application have been unsealed in court.
The files from the Duke of Sussex’s case were released after a federal judge in Washington ruled in favour of the Heritage Foundation.
However, large sections of the documents have been heavily redacted.
The conservative think tank had asked for the documents to be released as part of a freedom of information request.
The foundation argued that there was an “intense public interest” in whether the exiled royal received special treatment during the application process for his US visa.
The Duke of Sussex’s reference to past drug use in his memoir, Spare, prompted the conservative think tank to question why he was allowed in the US.
A key question remains over whether or not Prince Harry did tick the ‘no’ box about drug use.
The files concluded the Duke of Sussex was not given special treatment by US officials.
The heavily redacted court documents read: “Plaintiffs allege that the records should be disclosed as public confidence in the government would suffer or to establish whether the Duke was granted preferential treatment.
“This speculation by Plaintiffs does not point to any evidence of government misconduct.
“The records, as explained above, do not support such an allegation but show the regulatory process involved in reviewing and granting immigration benefits which was done in compliance with the
Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. § 1103 and applicable rules and regulation.”
Judge Carl Nichols ruled that the redacted documents should be made public.
The Heritage Foundation has been seeking the release of the files after Prince Harry admitted using drugs in his tell-all memoir Spare and Netflix show.
The foundation has suggested that Prince Harry may have lied about using drugs on his visa application or been given special treatment by the previous White House administration.
US President Donald Trump last month ruled out seeking to deport Prince Harry while taking a swipe at his wife Meghan Markle, who he described as “terrible”.
