Queen Elizabeth II allegedly complained that Meghan Markle was spending too much money on her designer wardrobe, sparking a call from Prince Harry that is said to have left the late monarch “rolling her eyes”.
The Sussexes “spent a lot of money” before they quit the family, royal expert Robert Jobson said, prompting the then Prince Charles to tell his youngest son, “I’m not a bank anymore”.
Speaking on The Telegraph’s podcast The Daily T, associate editor Camilla Tominey revealed details of a phone call between the late Queen and her grandson Prince Harry.
She said: “(The Queen) also took a call from Harry and then reportedly remarked ‘more money’, rolling her eyes.”
Jobson replied: “I think the point was they had spent a lot of money, they had supported Harry ... he was then saying later ‘I never got any’.
“He did, he got many, many, many thousands of pounds. More than we can probably know to the point the King said, ‘I’m not a bank anymore’... so that’s quite telling.”
Tominey said “the Queen thought Meghan was spending too much on clothes”.
During her 2018 tour of Australia and New Zealand, the Duchess of Sussex raised eyebrows with her constantly changing wardrobe, which cost an estimated $A250,000.
Jobson replied: “She did. But some people might criticise that as in the 1940s and 1950s when (the late Queen) was being dressed for these tours there was a lot of money being spent on royal tours.”
Tominey then pointed to Meghan’s $122,000 kaftan-style Dior gown, which she wore while visiting Morocco in 2019.
Mr Jobson replied: “That was seen as over the top... not sending the right message. The Queen, at the end, was always about the right message. Throughout her life she got it exactly right.”
It came as eagle-eyed observers noted that Meghan’s one-minute trailer for her upcoming Netflix Christmas special featured clothing and jewels worth a whopping $120,000.
Throughout the clip, released last month, the Duchess of Sussex wore designer gear including an $8000 Max Mara coat, a $1300 Gabriela Hearst sweater vest and an $1800 Givenchy white shirt.
On her wrist, she had a staggering stack of bracelets worth around $80,000, the Daily Mail reports.
‘SALMONELLA SUSSEX: MEGHAN BLASTED OVER TURKEY PREP
Meghan Markle has been dubbed “Salmonella Sussex” for a hygiene mistake she made while preparing a turkey on Thanksgiving.
The California-based lifestyle guru shared a short Instagram clip where she seasoned a raw turkey in a roasting pan, rubbing it with spices and adding lemon zest,
“Let the ‘game’ begin, get it? #momjoke,” Meghan captioned the clip, which was set to Bob Dylan’s Turkey Chase.
But people online called out Meghan for wearing her rings and bracelets while preparing the raw turkey, saying it posed a bacteria risk.
“Meghan, what in the ‘Salmonella Sussex’ is going on here?!” one person wrote on X.
“I don’t know anyone who wears their rings and bracelets when handling food. Especially a turkey. Guaranteed spread of bacteria,” someone else tweeted.
Another said, “Oh my God that’s actually disgusting. I didn’t even notice until you pointed that out.”
The Duchess’s mistake showed she had little knowledge of “basic foot handling”, another critic said.
“She’s spreading bacteria all over everything she touched as well. Poultry has to be handled carefully and washing hands a lot to avoid cross contamination. Good grief,” another tweet read.
