Meghan Markle has sparked surgery claims with her first appearance since announcing she would not be attending the coronation.

The Duchess of Sussex, who has been out of the limelight in recent months, debuted a sleek straightened hairstyle as she appeared via video link at her photographer friend Misan Harriman’s TED Talk, the New York Post reports.

One Twitter user claimed that Ms Markle was going for a look similar to her estranged sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales.

They posted: “PLASTIC SURGERY ALERT? Sad Meghan Markle wants to be Kate Middleton so bad.”

One social media user posted: “Is she going for Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian or Jennifer Aniston here?”

Others speculated on the work they believed the Duchess has had done.

“Facelift, filler dissolved in lips, buccal fat removal, more filler in cheeks, Botox, more subtle veneers, chin implant is my guess,” one said.

Another claimed the Duchess had changed the colour of her eyes in order to look like Princess Catherine.

“Omg. Meghan Markle, who is jealous and obsessed with the Princess of Wales, is wearing hazel contact lenses to look like Kate.”

Some royals fans speculated that the Duchess was trying to copy the Princess of Wales.

Another royal fan posted: “She looks like she’s trying to look like Kate … that won’t happen.

Some came out to defend the Duchess, saying her new appearance was all about lighting and make-up contouring tricks.

“Hair straightening is something many black women do,” one posted. “It has nothing to do with ‘erasing all traces of origin.’ Also, white people need to shut up about black women’s hair.”

The New York Post reports that insiders close to the Sussex camp have denied the surgery claims and say that Ms Markle’s new look is the result of weight loss.

Photographer and social activist Misan Harriman, who has photographed Ms Markle and her children, said on Instagram after her speech: “The Duchess of Sussex was kind enough to introduce me onto the stage for my TED Talk.

“Thank you for all the support Meg.”

The clip may have been filmed at her home in the US, where she will likely spend the day of the coronation.

It comes amid claims by a royal expert that Prince Harry will use his appearance at the May 6 coronation as a “photo opportunity”.

The Duke of Sussex would likely be shunned by other royals at the event, Kieran Elsby, director of Media Global PR, told The Mirror.

“I think Harry may find the coronation tough, I suspect he will get a few photo opportunities near immediate family members, that will be all over magazines stateside, but away from the cameras, behind closed doors, I feel he won’t be acknowledged.

“After all, whatever is said, may end up in a new book or TV interview. So everyone will be careful not to be alone with him.”

The ceremony takes place on May 6 – the same day as their son Archie’s fourth birthday.

Close pal Omid Scobie said this was a factor in the couple’s decision to be apart.

He added: “Expect it to be a fairly quick trip to the UK for Prince Harry, who will only be attending the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey.”
