Weinstein has reportedly been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia, which is a form of cancer of the bone marrow.

Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 16 more years in jail

Disgraced Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia, according to reports.

Two sources told NBC that Weinstein, whose actions were responsible for the launch of the #MeToo movement, is undergoing treatment in prison at Rikers Island in New York.

Chronic myeloid leukaemia is an uncommon form of cancer of the bone marrow, and the average life expectancy of someone fighting the disease is around five years.

In a statement to NBC News on Monday night, Weinstein’s legal health care representative Craig Rothfeld told the outlet: “Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment.”

Weinstein has been battling numerous health issues since he was jailed.

Last month, he underwent emergency heart surgery to alleviate a significant amount of fluid in his lungs and heart.

And then just months earlier in July, he was treated in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 and double pneumonia.

Weinstein was convicted in New York in 2020 of the rape and sexual assault of former actor Jessica Mann in 2013, and of forcibly performing oral sex on former production assistant Mimi Haley in 2006.

But in April, New York’s highest court overturned Weinstein’s conviction on sex crime charges in a shock reversal in one of the defining cases of the #MeToo movement. The Court of Appeals found the trial judge erred in admitting the testimony of additional women who were allegedly abused by Weinstein but who were not named in the charges brought against him, and ordered a new trial.

Weinstein has denied all claims of sexual misconduct, saying his encounters were consensual.

In July, prosecutors in New York also announced that authorities were investigating “additional violent sexual assaults” allegedly carried out by Weinstein that were not subject to a statute of limitations.
