Former star of The Bachelor, Matt Agnew, has opened up about his unknown private struggle for the first time in a heart-wrenching interview.
The 35-year-old astrophysicist, who shot to fame on the Ten dating show in 2019, sat down on Jessica Rowe’s Big Talk podcast yesterday, where he revealed his decade-long struggle with depression.
He told how it led to him attempting to take his own life twice in 2021.
“A little over a decade ago I was diagnosed with clinical depression and have been on antidepressants since then. I’ve had a few challenges throughout that,” Agnew said.
“Things got really bad a few years ago when I tried to end my life in 2021. I woke up in hospital; I don’t remember much,” he added, holding back tears.
Five weeks after being discharged from hospital, Agnew said he quickly found himself in a similarly dark place.
“[I] was stopped by friends. This happened during Covid. I ended up being admitted as an impatient for three weeks at a mental health hospital,” he said of his second stay in hospital within a few weeks.
Agnew was soon diagnosed with bipolar, generalised anxiety disorder and emotion dysregulation.
An emotional Rowe said it was “the most intimate conversation” she’d ever had on her podcast.
“For you to share in this way is such a big thing. When you are in the midst of that, it feels like you’re the only one. By you sharing, other people listening realise there is always hope,” Rowe told Agnew.
“This is hard stuff but if we don’t share, it doesn’t help ourselves, people we love or people listening to these conversations.”
Agnew retreated from the public eye shortly after his season of The Bachelor.
He chose chemical engineer Chelsie McLeod over Abbie Chatfield in the finale, with the pair embarking on a brief relationship.
They announced their split three months after the final episode aired in late 2019.
