Model and actress Barbie Ferreira has revealed why she departed from the hit teen drama Euphoria.

Ms Ferreira filmed two seasons of the show before shocking fans when she announced she wasn’t returning for season three.

Plenty of rumours have started about why she’d leave a show at the height of its popularity but Ferreira, 26, has finally explained on Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert that she left because she felt her character wasn’t developing in a way she felt comfortable with.

“I think my character, who I love so dearly, I don’t think there was a place for her to go. I think there were places she could have gone, I just don’t think it would have fit into the show,” she said.

Ms Ferreira also boldly admitted she took issue with the character she needed to play.

“I wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don’t want to play that, and I think they didn’t want that either,” she said.

She also said that she didn’t think the creator of the show Sam Levinson was able to relate to her character.

“Sam writes for, like, things that he relates to. I don’t think he relates to Kat. I like Kat, so I get to go on my own path,” she said.

Ms Ferreira even admitted that originally she was worried that leaving the show would make her a “flop” but it has actually worked out.

“It really has been a good thing,” she admitted.

When Euphoria premiered in 2019, it quickly became part of the cultural conversation in the same way other teen dramas have, like The O.C and Gossip Girl.

Ferreira’s character Kat was particularly beloved because she was a plus-size woman and that was creating representation on screen.

Young girls that normally didn’t identify with the actors in their favourite shows, finally saw someone that looked like them.

Plenty of fans also praised that Ms Ferreira’s character wasn’t a shrinking wallflower she was a fully-fleshed-out character that explored her sexuality and wasn’t a passive bystander.

Her character famously uttered, “There’s nothing more powerful than a fat girl who doesn’t give a f**k,” and that phrase quickly went viral.

When Ms Ferreira announced she was leaving the show, she took to Instagram to pen some heartfelt words.

“After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye.”

“I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character that she is today.

“I put all my care and love into her, and I hope you guys could feel it,” the actress wrote.

Ms Ferreira also has a huge online presence and has amassed over 5 million Instagram followers, and she’s been very open about the industry’s lack of representation regarding women’s bodies.

She recently told Who What Wear that she thinks bigger bodies are out of fashion.

“I think bigger bodies are not as ‘trendy’ as they used to be, which is really sad to me.”

She also admitted that while people might think she’s constantly body confident, she has her own image battles.

“We all struggle with self-love, and I don’t think any young person has really figured it out yet,” she said.
