Saltburn: Shock Oscars result for much talked-about film

It’s the movie that got everyone talking – (grave scene, anyone?) – but despite the buzz, Saltburn has been given the cold shoulder by the Oscars.

It’s one of the most talked-about films of the year, but Saltburn has been given the cold shoulder by the Academy.

The list of nominations was read out by Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid in Los Angeles on Tuesday, local time, with the Emerald Fennell-directed dark comedy completely ignored, despite receiving nods at earlier awards ceremonies.

Saltburn star Barry Keoghan and Rosamund Pike were both nominated at the Golden Globes, for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. They were named in the same categories at the BAFTAs, while co-star Jacob Elordi also nabbed a Best Supporting Actor nod. It’s also nominated for Outstanding British Film and Best Original Score.

Keoghan has received widespread praise for his portrayal as the odd but intriguing Oliver, leaving audiences stunned by some of his character’s truly creepy antics.

Among the most bizarre – and talked-about – was his erotic graveyard scene, in which he is seen taking his pants off and dry-humping the pile of dirt atop a grave.

On the red carpet at the Golden Globes earlier this month, he admitted the entire thing had been improvised.

“I wanted to see what Oliver would do next,” Keoghan, 31, said.

“I wanted to see what the next level of obsession was.”

“And by that [I mean], I just wanted the camera to roll. Not to kind of pre-empt it or rehearse it and what happened, happened. It was one take, and I think it was right. It moved the story forward.”

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer stormed the field at the Oscars unveiling, collecting a whopping 13 nominations as it continues its highly-successful awards show run.

Despite Barbie landing in the Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrara), Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Original Song and Best Adapted Screenplay, its star performer, Margot Robbie, and director, Greta Gerwig, were unexpectedly shut out.

Just hours after the list was revealed, both Gosling and Ferrara spoke out about their “disappointment” over their director and co-star’s exclusion.
