Hillary Clinton has waded into the discourse surrounding Barbie’s Oscar nomination snubs in a bizarre statement that’s been savagely mocked online.

Former US president candidate Hillary Clinton has joined the chorus of people speaking out about Barbie’s Oscar nomination snubs.

The summer blockbuster, which grossed more than $1 billion at the box office after its July release, was nominated for eight Academy Awards on Wednesday, but notably, Greta Gerwig missed out on a Best Director nod while Margot Robbie wasn’t listed among Best Actress nominees.

Co-stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera – both of whom were nominated – expressed their disappointment regarding the oversight, and now, one-time presidential candidate Clinton has waded in.

“Greta & Margot, While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You’re both so much more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie,” Clinton, 76, tweeted.

Discourse surrounding the Barbie Oscar snubs was rife after nominations were unveiled, with many pointing out how Gosling being nominated for his role of Ken “proved the point of the entire movie”, which is about impossible standards women face in a patriarchal society.

Though many disagreed with that notion, pointing out how commercial success doesn’t automatically grant awards.
Greta Lee also didn’t receive a nomination for her brilliant performance in Past Lives, but it hasn’t generated nearly as much conversation.

Ms Clinton’s support of Barbie wasn’t exactly deemed credible as it inspired a barrage of tweets describing her statement – and her self-created hashtag #HillaryBarbie – “cringe”.

The backlash comes after Gosling, who was recognised as Best Supporting Actor, sensationally spoke out about Robbie and Gerwig’s omissions, saying that despite being “extremely honoured”, there is “no Ken without Barbie”.

“There is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” he said.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”

Barbie was nominated for eight Oscars.

He continued, “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized [sic] along with the other very deserving nominees.”

Ferrera, who is up for Best Supporting Actress, also spoke out about the snubs, saying, “I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated. Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. What Margot achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable. One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look.”

Barbie did score the all-important Best Picture nomination, as well as nods across writing, technical and music categories.
