Next month’s 2024 AACTA Awards will get a touch of Hollywood with Aussie superstar Margot Robbie confirmed as a special guest.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today announced the Barbie star will receive the AACTA Trailblazer Award at the ceremony presented by Foxtel Group on February 10.

The event is to be held at the HOTA, Home of the Arts on the Gold Coast – the Queensland town where she was born and raised.

“I am truly honoured to accept the AACTA Trailblazer Award, especially in my hometown on the Gold Coast,” Robbie said in a statement. “Australia has always been my grounding force, and to receive this recognition here is incredibly special.”

“I believe in the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on shaping culture and inspiring others. This award is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of everyone involved in the film community, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

“Thank you to AACTA for this tremendous honour and I look forward to celebrating with the Australian screen industry in Queensland next month.”

The AACTA Trailblazer Award aims to recognise achievements of Aussie entertainers whose body of work both locally and overseas has served as an inspiration to others. Previous recipients have included Chris Hemsworth, Rose Byrne, Simon Baker and Isla Fisher.

The award comes off the back of a massive year for Robbie, whose previous acclaimed work includes I, Tonya and Bombshell – both of which scored her Best Actress Oscar nominations in the past.

This year, she played the lead role and was an executive producer on the global smash hit Barbie, which amassed a whopping $1 billion worldwide in just 17 days from its release last July.

It was her LA-based production company, LuckyChap Entertainment – which she runs with husband Tom Ackerley and friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr – that helped propel the film.

Although her efforts and that of Barbie director Greta Gerwig were unexpectedly snubbed at the upcoming Oscars – only co-stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera were nominated for their supporting roles – there’s no denying the duo were the driving forces behind the movie.

And there was no one more disappointed than Gosling, who played Ken in the film.

“I am extremely honoured to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honoured and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken,” he wrote in a statement.

“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

The AACTA Awards airs 7pm on Saturday, February 10 on Network Ten
