A reunion with his “forever crush” Kylie Minogue is top of Robbie Williams’ wishlist for his pre-match performance at the 2022 AFL Grand Final.
“We shall see. I don’t want to give anything away, especially seeing as nothing is set in stone right now,” Williams told News Corp Australia.
But Williams may have to widen his search for an Australian co-star as it is believed Minogue has another commitment that weekend.
The British superstar, who has enjoyed a long love affair with Australia, may switch up his set to include an iconic song such as John Farnham’s You’re The Voice.
The Rock DJ superstar was courted for the big gig during his stay in Melbourne in May to film the Better Man biopic.
Williams said this week ahead of the release of his 25th anniversary record XXV he was unaware of the social media pile-on directed at every musician who takes the big cheque to perform on the MCG pitch.
“Such is the case. I wake up in the morning and ask my wife ‘Should I be wearing this or not?’ (so) I get the Twitter feed happening in real time with my wife every day,” he said. “I can put up with it.”
Williams is uncharacteristically tight-lipped when asked to reveal just how he will be portrayed as a CGI monkey in what sounds like a bonkers movie about his life, created by Australian filmmaker Michael Gracey.
“I’m not allowed to say. I mean, I’m such a big mouth and I’ve probably said too much already but this film will be unusual in many aspects, and I’ve been told under pain of death that I can’t speak about that particular aspect,” he said.
Nor will he be spilling the beans on his plans to tour Australia next year, preferring not to incur the wrath of his longtime promoter Michael Chugg.
But it would not be surprising if his XXV tour dates just happen to be announced during his brief return to Melbourne in late September.
“Oh, that would be cool,” Williams said about a potential tour reveal.
“I dare say that if there is, Chuggi will be exploiting that moment and I will help him to exploit that moment too. We shall see.”
Williams release XXV, which features orchestral reimaginings of hits including Kids, Angels and Let Me Entertain You, on September 9.
