New grants to fund USQ students’ overseas trips

Be it online or in-person, around 100 University of Southern Queensland students will get an overseas education experience thanks to 2021 New Colombo Plan (NCP) funding.
The University will receive $335,500 from the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as part of the NCP Mobility Program to support short-term study, internships, and research in locations across the Indo-Pacific region.
It will see USQ students take part in placements including nursing in Vietnam, sport and exercise in Solomon Islands, surveying in Nepal, and paramedicine placements in Thailand; provide study options for ceramics and painting in Japan; or undertake indigenous studies opportunities in Fiji.
And, for the first time, eligible students can spend a whole semester at the University’s partner university in Thailand, Mahidol University.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Ren Yi said the experiences would improve students’ cultural competence and build their international network for future employment opportunities.
“I would also like to congratulate and acknowledge the academic leads for their support of this important learning initiative, which contributes to Australia’s diplomacy efforts in the Indo-Pacific region as well as continue to support the educational, research, and industry partnerships that USQ has developed or leveraged in the delivery of these projects,” he said.
Professor Yi acknowledged the impact of travel restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with projects to be delayed or reimagined virtually.
“While, of course, certain practical aspects will be postponed, we’re emphasising innovation and flexibility to ensure our students have fulfilling and impactful international experience.”
The University’s study abroad program offers student opportunities to participate in an overseas study experience whether it be online or in-person, short term or a semester or year.
