One of Bendigo’s most exclusive private schools topped the region’s NAPLAN results but one public high school also ranked as one of the best in the region.

Girton Grammar recorded Bendigo’s top NAPLAN results for both primary and secondary students.

The school’s Year 5 average mark was 550, 31 marks above Creek Street Christian College in second place.

Girton Grammar Principal Dr Emma O’Rielly said she was “incredibly proud” of her student’s results.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work, dedication and outstanding outcomes,” she said.

“While NAPLAN is a useful indicator of academic progress and we are pleased with these results, it is just one measure of student learning and progression.

“At Girton Grammar School, we engage in a holistic approach to education that incorporates academic excellence, co-curricular engagement, student wellbeing and social emotional learning.

“The power of connection and belonging cannot be underestimated when it comes to students achieving academically.”

Dr O’Rielly said the school had begun implementing a new pedagogical framework based on the “science of learning”.

“Using evidence-based practices, our dedicated teachers are advancing interactive explicit instruction in the classroom, ensuring every student equitable access to effective, high-quality instruction,” she said.

“We will continue to strengthen this approach into the future.”

Girton’s Year 9 students clinched the region’s top scores across all five NAPLAN subjects.

Other top performing secondary schools included Creek Street Christian College, Victory Christian College and Catherine McAuley College.

Pyramid Hill College was the only Bendigo public high school to rank in the top 5.

Public schools fared better in the primary school results, with Trentham District Primary School, Maldon Primary School and Quarry Hill Primary School ranking in the top six local primary schools.

To determine how each school performed in 2025, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort (Year 5 or Year 9) were combined and the average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the federal government’s MySchool website.
