A popular Toowoomba primary school has put forward plans to expand its campus, in a bid to cater for an extra 50 students and several new teachers.

St Saviour’s Primary School on Neil Street in South Toowoomba lodged an application with the council this week to complete a two-stage redevelopment, creating more classrooms and carparking spots to support expected growth.

According to the report by Precinct Urban Planning, much of the plans focus on central buildings, as well as the northern and southern boundaries.

“The first stage includes redevelopment of the ground floor level of the main school building at the northwestern corner to allow for removal of the primary school canteen and enclose part of the covered breakout area, resulting in 128 sqm of additional gross floor area,” the report said.

“This will allow this portion of the building to be reconfigured from two general learning areas into three GLAs and a multipurpose room.

“This stage also includes reconfiguration of the first floor level of the main school building to expand the administration area into the existing learning support room, noting these works do not result in additional gross floor area.”

Plans in the second stage will include extensions to the ground floor level of the main school building on its southern side, adding 183 sqm of gross floor area to the site.

“This will allow this portion of the building to be reconfigured from two GLAs into three GLAs and a learning support room,” the report said.

“This stage also includes a redesign of the northern drop-off zone adjacent the school’s Lawrence Street frontage to allow for one additional on-site drop-off space and five additional on-site angled carparks in the modified circular driveway off Lawrence Street.”

“The proposed works make provision for an additional two general learning areas that will increase student numbers over time for an additional 50 students and four full-time equivalent staff.

“This will allow the school to progressively expand to three-stream classes for all primary school age-groups.”

St Saviour’s is Toowoomba’s oldest Catholic school, and currently caters for about 400 male and female students.

The council is still assessing the application.

NAPLAN a success for St Saviours.
