FAIRHOLME College is in the top 10 best schools in Queensland for year three NAPLAN results this year.

A News Corp analysis of the 2018 NAPLAN data, released this week, found year three students at Fairholme performed the sixth best in the state across literacy and numeracy and was the only Toowoomba school to be in the top 20 across all year levels.

Fairholme College students also topped the list of Toowoomba schools for the most year nine students achieving above the national minimum standards (NMS) in literacy and numeracy, with 97 per cent.

One hundred per cent of year three students achieved above the NMS for their year level.

Year three student Alicia Yap said she was proud of how she did in the test.

"It was more difficult than I thought it would be," Miss Yap said.

"I feel proud of our class for doing so well, I think they'll be proud of themselves too.

Fellow classmate Gracie Walker said hearing the results made her "very happy".

"The writing bit was probably my favourite part, I don't know why, it was just fun," Miss Walker said.

"The whole test wasn't too stressful."

Principal Dr Linda Evans said the state-wide standing made her very proud of her students.

"I admit that I was very chuffed to see Fairholme up there," she said.

"We do have a strong record in terms of our NAPLAN results. It's lovely for the year threes and affirming for the teachers as well for the work they do.''

HOW TOOWOOMBA'S YEAR 3 STUDENTS PERFORMED:

Dr Evans said NAPLAN was not a "primary drive" for the students.

"It happens, we are aware it's going to happen, we know what it will look like in a sense, but we don't focus too much attention on it," Dr Evans said.

"It's one measure, it's by no means the most important part of what we do as a school, but it is always nice for students to know they're performing well against other students across the state and across Australia."

She said she believed the Fairholme model of education was a reason for the school's academic success.

"I think we've got great students to begin with, we have very supportive families and we have great teachers. There is a lovely learning culture," she said.

"We know the students, we know them really well. We know their strengths and what challenges them.

"We do a lot of music, drama, sport, the arts.

"It's allowing students to find something they're good at which then transfers into other areas of learning. If you find something you can do well, you can often then do well in other things."
