’TIS the season to be jolly ... Or pose in a Santa hat with a fire-shooting guitar, like Mad Max Fury Road fan and Federal Senator David Leyonhjelm.

The Liberal Democrat has photoshopped himself into a scene from the post-apocalyptic film, with his head appearing on the body of a character called the Doof Warrior.

The flame-throwing, red jumpsuit-wearing, truck-riding guitarist is the cult hero of the film, appearing in the middle of a desert chase scene riding a truck along with his squad of Japanese taiko drummers before flying off a stack of amplifiers and speakers on a bungee cable harness while blasting sludge metal riffs on a double-necked guitar, gaining speed as the chase intensifies.

In a clue to the thinking behind the bizarre image, Senator Leyonhjelm wrote inside the card: “Do not, my friends, become addicted to taxes. It will take hold of you and you will resent its absence!”

The line is a reference to that spoken by the film’s villain, Immortan Joe, who says: “Do not, my friends, become addicted to water ...”

One Nation leader Senator Pauline Hanson’s first Christmas card since her triumphant return to Canberra features a colourful cartoon depicting her as a wry-smiling Santa, riding a sleigh pulled by two kangaroos.

The bright, cheerful card is now awkwardly outdated, depicting the One Nation team as it was before Senator Rodney Culleton quit the party acrimoniously on Monday.

A talkback caller to 2GB read out his card from Senator Hanson on air earlier this month: “Dear Scott, we can’t thank you enough for your support over the past year. There is an enormous sense of pride in what the party has been able to achieve in the past year. We would say that we’re just getting started. Have a magnificent Christmas and safe travel if you’re on the road. Merry Christmas from all the senators and One Nation crew. We look forward to a prosperous New Year.”

The caller specified that the card was “definitely personally signed, and not an imprint”, noting that the ink was smudged.

This personal touch seems to have charmed fellow crossbencher Derryn Hinch; the Herald Sun he had received a card from Senator Hanson, helping mend their rift over the Victorian Senator’s backflip on the backpacker tax.

Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce took a more traditional approach, posing with his wife Natalie and daughters Odette, Bridgette, Julia and Caroline in this year’s Christmas card.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale opted for an environmental message with cards bearing images of whales, turtles and an underwater reef, along with the message: “Wishing you and your loved ones joy and happiness this festive season — and time to enjoy some of our most precious places.”

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has also opted for a personalised Christmas card showcasing his family, unlike his predecessor Julia Gillard who preferred to send an Oxfam charity card.
