IT’S like a glimpse of an alternative universe.
The first female President of the United States of America stares out at a moonlight sky, her hand on the back of a chair in the Oval Office.
As Hillary Clinton traverses the US promoting her book about her devastating electoral loss, the New Yorker has released the cover image it would have run, had she won.
Titled “The First,” the illustration by Malika Favre imagines a brave new world that must now seems like a distant fantasy to Clinton’s supporters.

Instead, magazine’s post-election cover featured Bob Staake’s “The Wall.”
The New Yorker’s art editor Françoise Mouly wrote at the time: “When we first received the results of the election, we felt as though we had hit a brick wall, full force.”

It released the alternative cover ahead of next week’s issue, which carries an interview with Clinton “about her new memoir, the campaign, her stinging loss, and its aftermath”.
The vanquished candidate tells journalist David Remnick: “Literally, at times when I was writing it, I had to go lie down . . . I just couldn’t bear to relive it.”
Twitter users were less than sympathetic to the New Yorker’s alternative cover, with many advising the publication to “move on”.
