‘Didn’t have to’: Worker reveals heartwarming workplace act

A man working FIFO in Australia has shared exactly how his boss reacted after he was hit with some devastating news.

Concern raised over plans to increase workers' annual leave

A Spanish man working in Australia has shared a heartwarming story of the time his boss had his back when he needed it the most.

UK workplace expert Ben Askins has found a niche online calling out bad employers, but as a change of pace, he shared a time a boss recently did the right thing.

A Spanish man told Mr Askins that when he was working fly-in and fly-out in the mines, his supervisor told him to phone home.

“I made the call and discovered my mum had passed away in Spain,” the anonymous man claimed.

“Obviously I was devastated. When the news broke my superintendent arranged for an employee to stay with me and take me back to camp.”

The man then said that shortly afterwards, the administration team got into contact with him and, with the support of his wife, helped make all the arrangements so he could fly back to Spain immediately and be with his family.

“They didn’t have to do this and it is beautiful gesture that has stayed with me,” he said.

Mr Askins said the response was really important because companies always talk about wanting employees to stay with them for a long time, but if a worker stays for decades, that means there will be times in their life where their personal life impacts their work life.

Mr Askins said that companies need to behave like this when that happens and “stand up and support” their worker through that tough period.

“Fair play to this company they’ve done exactly the right thing,” he praised.

Mr Askins said that from a moral point of view, they’ve done the right thing, but also from a commercial perspective, the company has a well.

“If you do look after your team they are going to be so much more motivated to come back to them,” he said.

Mr Askins said that if a company treats a person well, employees will work harder and be more loyal.

The workplace expert said that it is great to see a workplace doing the right thing, but it is also a great example of how to run a business in a way that will help it grow.

“This company 100 per cent did the right thing morally, but it’s also a really smart business decision,” he said.

People online quickly praised the company for looking after an employee during a difficult time.

“Excellent post. And I bet this guy makes for a great boss,” one praised.

“There are good companies out there who genuinely look after their staff. Need to shout more about them,” another said.

“Staff never forget when you demonstrate care for them in tangible ways. They will go into bat for the company and will never leave to soon,” one shared.

One person commented and shared an example of how not to treat someone who has recently lost a family member.

“When my father in law died, of course I had to up and leave work, travelling 90 minutes into London. All the company I worked for asked was “when are you coming back?” Shocking,” he said.
