The Wagner family wants to make Toowoomba the airfreight capital of Australia, and the new $18m trade distribution centre at Wellcamp Airport is a vital part of that dream.
Wagner Corporation unveiled the fruits of 156 days of work on Tuesday, a 4000 sqm facility that can store and prepare thousands of tonnes of fresh produce and other freight for planes headed to all parts of the world.
The centre will create hundreds of jobs directly and thousands across the supply chain.
Chairman John Wagner said he wanted to see more than 10 flights to and from Wellcamp Airport every week in the near future.
“We are the fastest-growing airport in the country from a freight point of view, and we’ll continue to push that as hard as we can,” he said.
“What we’ve seen is inquiries from all over the world because this centre is on the international stage, they’re wanting to know how they can get involved.
“We would expect in the not-too-distant future to get 10-12 freighters a week through here, and that’s both inbound and outbound freight.
“If you say every freighter that goes out has a freight of 50 tonnes, that’s a pretty significant amount of freight.”
Brother and company director Denis Wagner said the facility was part of multi-decade vision for the airport, which included an upcoming multi-modal freight hub with the Inland Rail.
“The opportunity going forward will be not just outgoing freight but also for inbound freight,” he said.
“We will see Wellcamp Airport as the airfreight capital of Australia.
“It’s a very long supply chain and will ultimately be huge for this region.”
