When 11-year-old Tyler Craze received an activity kit from his grandmother, he was not expecting a booming business just months later.

Tyler loved the soap making kit within the set, and convinced his mum Melinda Teatman to invest in more creations.

“I had him do a business proposal because he wanted me to spend a lot of money,” she said.

“I needed to see that commitment from him, and he did a lot of research into it to buy proper soap making equipment.”

From there, Tyler’s Soapy Monkey business was born.

“I liked the chemistry of it,” he said.

The business’s Facebook page was created in October, and it quickly became popular among residents, with Tyler soon to have a retail presence in Crows Nest.

“Tyler’s soaps are made individually, so every soap has to be measured, mixed and poured separately, and that takes a lot of time,” Ms Teatman said.

“We weren’t expecting the amount of support he would get.

“We’re trying to keep him focused at school, but if he wants to do it, he doesn’t let up. I honestly thought he would get sick of it.

“I will never make him do something he doesn’t want to do. He only pours as much as he wants. I don’t want it to be a bad experience for him.”

With a wide variety of shapes and sizes on offer, Tyler said his favourites were the Lego men, frogs and rose-shaped soaps.

Popular item Soap Saver, with 31 small soaps in a pack and ideal for one soap a night, was inspired by a family member.

“It’s aimed at my sister Mia, because she uses 30,000 pumps of soap a night and fills the bottle back up of water,” he said.

“She calls them potions.”

Ms Teatman said her son got tired of her being frustrated and suggested small moulds be used to combat the excessive use.

Tyler is saving his profits for a University fund to go to NASA.

“I really want to go to space,” he said.
