In a move that has shocked customers, a struggling national franchise’s long-running Toowoomba restaurant has shut its doors immediately.

A longstanding chain restaurant in the Toowoomba CBD has revealed its immediate closure.

The city’s Hog’s Breath Cafe on Neil St will not reopen, with its franchisees announcing the change on social media.

“After many years of serving up good times, great meals, and unforgettable memories, Hog’s Breath Toowoomba has now officially closed its doors,” the post said.

“We want to say a sincere thank you … for every steak shared, every birthday celebrated, and every family night, first date, and friendly catch-up that happened within our walls.

“You’ve been more than just customers; you’ve felt like part of our family.

“While this chapter has come to a close, we’re incredibly proud of the memories made and the friendships formed.”

The news follows continued struggles for the national restaurant chain, which was founded in the late 1980s with a focus on steak, curly fries and eccentric aesthetics.

At its height, Hog’s Breath had more than 80 locations across Australia, but this has since dropped to just 21.

The company underwent a significant overhaul in 2023 by reducing the size of the franchises in a bid to keep costs down.

The Toowoomba closure also comes after chief executive Steven Spurgin announced he would be leaving the business this month.

Mr Spurgin forecasted potential future closures to News Corp two years ago.

“Unfortunately, we may see further closures as a result of this, but we will do all we can to keep open and sustainable, but we’re committed to operating within the Franchising Code of Conduct, and meeting all the requirements of running a business in Australia, including abiding by business and tax laws,” he said.

Former Retail Food Group executive Tom Elliott has taken over the role, saying he would focus on guest experiences, digital capability and value-driven marketing.

“The dining landscape is evolving fast. At Hog’s Breath, we’re doubling down on what matters most – great food, great value, and great experiences,” he told News Corp this month.
