Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport flights on Bonza to Townsville take off on Wednesday

Just days after its maiden flight from Melbourne to Toowoomba, residents will take off from the Garden City to Bonza’s second destination. Here’s how much tickets will cost:

Toowoomba residents will fly to Townsville for cheap from Wednesday, with low-cost carrier Bonza announcing the start of routes to and from the city’s second destination this week.

The twice-weekly flights to “The Ville” on Wednesdays and Sundays come just two days after the first of four weekly flights to Melbourne landed at Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.

Flights to the Whitsundays will start from Friday.

Bonza, which uses new Boeing 737 MAX planes, has promised to fly passengers to new destinations from as little as $50 per flight hour.

Airfares down 13 per cent from record highs

That means residents can fly to Melbourne from $79, along with Townsville and the Whitsundays from $59.

Theoretically, there could be 150,000 passenger movements through Wellcamp Airport in a year thanks to Bonza’s eight weekly flights.

But concerns have been raised by expert aviation consultant Dr Tony Webber about some of the upstart airline’s 27 routes, including the planned flights between Toowoomba with Townsville and Whitsundays.

However, Bonza CEO Tim Jordan said he was confident in the company’s ability to put bums in seats, citing its unique approach to running routes.

“We’re delighted to launch this new route, which will link Toowoomba and Townsville directly providing a timely boost to both regions’ tourism economy,” he said.

Mr Jordan told News Corp on Monday there were still tickets available for the Whitsundays flight, saying it was the perfect opportunity for a last-minute weekend away.

“We would encourage all of those people within the region to take this opportunity to go and explore and to stop driving down the hill and jump on our wonderful purple aircraft,” he said.
