Dressed in matching trucker hats and green collared shirts, two boys effortlessly jumped into a pen with the Angus cattle at their FarmFest stall.

Jacob Schmaling (9) and Hugh Barker’s (11) dads work together at a cattle-breeding farm in Haden, 45km north of Toowoomba and today they are off the farm and helping them out at the Exton Angus’ stall at FarmFest.

Both said they enjoyed the “feeling of being around cattle” and wanted to work either as cattle farmers or cattle breeders when they grow up.

While FarmFest focuses mostly around commercial farm machinery, the livestock section was full of school-aged children – from kids interested in looking at the animals, to teenagers who are the sole carers of the animals, and it is here where they can really get a chance to show off what they have been working on at school or on a their parent’s farm.

Preparing for the cattle parade was Oakey State High School students Shantal Barrow and Skye Rose who were showing off two of the school’s calves, a six-week, and ten-week old Highland cows.

The students were part of an Agricultural Science program at Oakey High which introduces students to agricultural combining both science and practice to gives them the tools to develop a career in agriculture.

Oakey High Ag Science teacher Debbie Goudie said a lot of the learning comes as “peer tutoring” to older students working with younger students to care for the animals at the school.

Events like this give the students a chance to show off their hard work, she said.

The livestock to the latest agricultural machinery the day brought people from the Darling Downs and regional Queensland to browse products and get expert advice on farming practice and the wait to get the car parked was worth it.

Elders FarmFest is the biggest primary industry event in the state and will continue for the next two days until Thursday, June 6, 2024.
