Toowoomba CBD pubs like Fitzy’s hoping for big 2023 after ‘tumultuous’ year due to Covid, economic challenges

The hospitality sector has endured a rollercoaster of a year – but venues say they’re ready to end 2022 in style and hope to kick off a massive 12 months ahead.

Anita Armanasco and her team at Fitzy’s Toowoomba are getting ready to welcome the new year in style – and are hoping it will bring with it a bumper 12 months for the hospitality sector.

The hotel’s director, who is busy preparing for its massive NYE party, said Toowoomba publicans are happy to put the “tumultuous” year that was 2022 in the rear view mirror.

Small businesses endured a rollercoaster year thanks to economic challenges, the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, rising costs of living and supply chain issues.

But Ms Armanasco said she also wasn’t short of highlights, making her optimistic for the year ahead.

“It’s so important to support local, not only for the past two years but right now,” she said.

“We want people to support the community, because we’ve had our ups and downs.

“It’s been a tumultuous period for all businesses, but let’s get out, celebrate and have a good time.”

Fitzy’s is not the only venue hosting NYE celebrations, with outlets like Cork and Lever, Bodega, Tatts, Society and the Spotted Cow running themed parties to ring in 2023.

Ms Armanasco said she wanted to see every business get strong support this weekend.

“We’re just thrilled to see the town thriving, that’s what we’re here to facilitate – to create an entertaining place for patrons,” she said.

“(For our party) we have midnight celebrations, cocktails, we have bands up the front and a DJ with an epic light show up the back – we’re basically lighting up the night.

“It’s fantastic to see the whole town is banding together, there’s something for everyone.

“The hospitality community deserve some kickbacks, whether it’s an afternoon drink or dinner or a champagne at midnight.”
