A Toowoomba barista is off to country’s self-proclaimed coffee capital Melbourne this weekend in a bid for the enviable title of Australia’s richest barista.

Sweet Talk barista David Searston is one of 28 baristas from around Australia who will have the chance to take home a share of $40,000 in a competition at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo between May 12 – 14.

The competition includes three fast-paced knockout rounds and puts an edge to regular coffee service, testing the barista’s skills in speed in making drinks, latte design and ability to taste and identify coffee varieties.

Mr Searston said he was looking forward to the competition and felt most confident about his speed in the first round, where he will have to make six coffees in 10 minutes.

He said he was least confident in the coffee tasting, having only completed it once before, but still scored 18 out of 20.

Mr Searston is also an accomplished playwright and has had his plays performed throughout the United States after he won a competition which put one on stage in New York in 2020.

He said he still writes plays outside of his work at Sweet Talk, but said he takes coffee “very seriously”.

“I just think it is awesome how it perks people up,” he said

“In the mornings when someone is super tired and they take their sip of coffee and it just picks them up for the day.”
