Toowoomba residents have expressed their anger after learning a city doughnut business was rejected for the lucrative Carnival of Flowers in favour of an out-of-town vendor.
OMG Decadent Donuts was passed up for a chance to showcase at the Food and Wine Festival, with organisers arguing it was a franchise despite evidence to the contrary.
Chronicle readers, who learned about the snub in Thursday’s edition, argued whether the Toowoomba Regional Council needed to better support local operators at the major tourist event.
“We need to support our community first and foremost, it’s all about building stronger communities which needs to start at the top,” Deidre Hillberg wrote.
“This is ridiculous! The TCOF should be showcasing and supporting local businesses,” Kylie Carson added.
OMG thanked locals for their support on social media.
“We as business owners are fair and reasonable people and our view is if you can’t have a locally made doughnut, don’t have doughnuts at all,” co-owner Rob Sampson wrote.
“It’s not sour grapes – it’s about keeping the showcasing to local businesses.”
