A MAJOR national retailer looks set to move out of the Toowoomba CBD and into a shopping centre, with stock being moved out of the old space.

Rivers has virtually cleared out all the clothes from its previous spot on Ruthven St, just up from the intersection with Margaret St.

It comes as signage has appeared in Grand Central Shopping Centre for Rivers, highlighting that it was coming soon.

The previous space is owned by Walton Stores, which operates a popular food precinct next door.

A spokeswoman for the owner was contacted for comment.

The move from the main strip of the Toowoomba CBD comes amid a massive debate between the council, business owners and shoppers over how to manage the city's centre.

CBD parking woes

This discussion has been punctuated by duelling petitions over whether to shorten the length of parking in the CBD.

The council will limit parking in the centre strip of Ruthven and Margaret Sts to just one hour.

Rivers was contacted for comment about the move.
