AN OAKEY childcare centre that went into liquidation last month struck hard times after accumulating debts totalling $100,000, it can be revealed.
Documents obtained by The Chronicle detail how Oakey Child Care Pty Ltd, trading as Cuddly Bears Oakey, owed 93 people money when liquidators were called in to help save the embattled centre almost two weeks ago.
In total, Cuddly Bears Oakey owes former and current employees $40,828 in unpaid wages.
McLeod and Partners are listed as liquidators on the documents, which show Cuddly Bears owes a total of $122,263 to all of its listed creditors.
McLeod and Partners were contacted for comment, but did not respond before deadline.
News of the centre's shock demise meant that 65 families were forced to find last minute care for the children, with Cuddly Bears' June 15 announcement that it would be closing down for good that same day.
As a result of the company's collapse, up to 20 people will lose their jobs.
Nearly all of those employees were listed as creditors owed a total of $40,828.
While Cuddly Bears has yet to comment publicly about the situation, it claimed via its Facebook page that the shut-down was a sad day for the small town last month.
United Voice Toowoomba organiser Chad Maxwell said staff at the centre would receive full support from the group.
"This is not good enough for our local educators, who work so hard to educate and care for local children, to be treated this way," he said.
"United Voice Queensland will be assisting our members to do everything possible to recover this wage theft and entitlements."
