We all know that Brisbane is spoiled for choice when it comes to legal practitioners.

In fact the top 10 ranked national law firms in Australia have offices in the city.

According to a Best Lawyers’ latest Best Law Firms Australia report, Minter Ellison came out on top, followed by Herbert Smith Freehills and Corrs Chambers Westgarth who are all based in the CBD’s Golden Triangle.

They are followed by Ashurst, King & Wood Mallesons and Clayton Utz who are also happily domiciled in big shiny towers in the CBD.

The Best Lawyers report says Brisbane received 878 Best Law Firms honours, coming third nationally behind Sydney and Melbourne.

Overall 20 total firms were honoured as Law Firm of the Year, and 18 of them have a Queensland office.

It’s worth noting that the survey responses come directly from those firms that have been honoured as Best Law Firms or Best Lawyers.

You must be honoured to qualify for the comprehensive survey. This ensures the responses represent key legal industry trends from the top firms in the country.

The top three practice areas that Brisbane firms were recognised for were insurance law (43 firms honoured), litigation (39) and alternative dispute resolution (36 firms) honoured.

In contrast Sydney and Melbourne’s top three practice areas are litigation, alternative dispute resolution and real property law.

Volunteering

For some they’re man’s best friend and for others they’re fur babies and for a few they’re just hard work. But there’s no denying that for the most part we love our dogs.

And national law firm Barry Nilsson – which by the way is one of the most consistently top ranked firms in insurance law – has recognised that fact and they’re giving back to our furry friends with corporate volunteer days at RSCPA for their Brisbane team.

On June 10, as part of the firm’s company-wide Volunteer Leave Policy, Barry Nilsson Brisbane staff are being encouraged to step away from the office and give back to their communities.

About 20 staff, including principal Stewart Boland, senior associates Georgia Edwards, Emma Blay and Krishna Alister, and special counsel Ashlee Bonanno, will be leaving their 345 Queen St eyrie to lend a hand to walk dogs, pack dog food and manage food bag recycling.

Earlier this year, Barry Nilsson’s national Volunteer Leave Policy saw its Melbourne office to take part in a corporate volunteering day with RSPCA, where they packaged more than 80kg of dog food and packed more than 35kg of empty food bags to be recycled.

Barry Nilsson principal and head of Pro Bono & Corporate Responsibility Katie Swain who instigated the volunteer leave initiative, allows staff to be connect and be able to give back to the community.

“The RSPCA volunteer day is a great opportunity to step outside the office with the team, and spending the day caring for animals in need is such a heartwarming way to do something hands-on to give back to the community,” she says.

“Beyond facilitating annual volunteering days in Brisbane and across the country, our Impact Project has also seen us deliver more than $2m in value to pro bono clients and more than $100,000 in the last year in donations to charitable and community organisations.”
