Former reality star Stephanie Matto has pocketed a small fortune since deciding to sell her own farts to flatulence fiends across the globe.

Gassy poo particle-filled pockets of wind – or farts – would more often leave someone shaking their head than handing over their wallet.

But as one “fartrepeneur” recently discovered, not only is there a section of society that enjoys smelling other people’s flatulence, a striking proportion are willing to hand over major dollars for the privilege.

Resourceful businesswoman and former 90 Day Fiance star Stephanie Matto has cornered the global fart-loving market, so much so that she’s managed to make $200,000 (A$275,000) selling jars of her own musty toots online.

In this week’s episode of news.com.au podcast I’ve Got News For You, Ms Matto revealed the delicate process of capturing and storing her flatus before it could be shipped off to her customers.

“I found that the most potent way of capturing the farts was to take like a little fabric woven flower petal and fart directly onto the petal, and then put it into the jar, seal it with a cork lid and then saran wrap or tape it and then put it into another bag,” she said.

Ms Matto said there were a few fussy sniffers among her client base, including one person who asked that she create a fart with some aromatic notes of cheddar.

To meet his request, Ms Matto went to the effort of consuming a whole block of cheese throughout the day until her farts met the desired stench.

“So there was one guy for example who wanted cheddar cheese farts so like the whole day I was eating like a whole block of cheese pretty much,” she recalled.

“But I feel like that takes a lot of additional effort and kind of changes the entire batch to smell like what the what the one person wants.”

Typically, Ms Matto consumed a potent diet consisting of black bean salads, protein muffins and cabbage soup — crowd-pleasing recipes she could rely on to deliver her signature scent.

“I’m kind of like the Einstein of fart jars, I have it down to like a really like a mathematical equation,” she said.

Her dedication to the craft has well and truly paid off, having sold three drop shipments of up to 100 jars, each priced between $500 (A$697) and $1,000 (A$717).

Each release sold out entirely, leaving Ms Matto to pocket close to $200,000 (A$275,000) for the whole project.

Selling fart jars isn’t all cheese and bean salad however, with Ms Matto ending up in hospital just before Christmas with symptoms she initially suspected to be heart-related.

“That day I woke up, I made myself three very large protein shakes, and I made a big pot of black bean soup, and I was working my way through it all day,” she said.

“And then by the time the evening rolled around, I was feeling so-so sick, like there was a tightening feeling around my heart and my chest, I couldn’t breathe in all the way. I was laying in bed that night, and I couldn’t breathe in fully. So I thought maybe I was having like a blood clot or a heart attack.”

After being rushed to hospital and undergoing a series of tests and scans, it was eventually discovered that her symptoms were merely a result of the huge volume of gas brewing in her stomach.

“They discharged me that night saying that it seemed like I have like very severe gas pain. So I should take an antacid, and some get some gas suppressant pills,” she said.

While the “fart attack” was enough to call an end to Ms Matto’s physical fart selling days, she has since launched 5000 digital fart jar designs as Non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The project has proven to be no less effective in filling up her bank account, with it having made $120,000 in its first week alone.

“It’s awesome that I was able to break into this community which can be somewhat hard to break into. There’s so many people and there’s so much great art out there. So it was cool that I was able to stand out.”
