A former high school campus in the small Riverland town of Glossop is being offloaded by the state government’s development agency, three years after it amalgamated with a redeveloped school site in nearby Berri.

The Glossop site was previously the middle school campus of the former Glossop High School – hosting years 8-10 – before it was consolidated into a single site at the former senior school campus in Berri in 2022.

A $17m-plus redevelopment of the Berri school facility catering for up to 800 students followed, including new and upgraded education buildings, technical workshops, performing arts facilities and administration areas.

The Glossop property, which stretches across more than 17ha of land at the south-eastern edge of the town centre, is now being pitched as an opportunity for developers to transform the site for farming, residential or commercial development.

RWC Adelaide partner Jack Dyson, who’s selling the property on behalf of Renewal SA, said groups interested in taking over and using the existing facilities – including teaching and administration buildings, a gymnasium, ovals and storage sheds – were also expected to show interest.

“Located on the corner of Old Sturt Highway and Distillery Rd, the former high school presents an exciting opportunity to own and operate the education facilities, or developer to suit horticulture, residential or commercial uses,” he said.

“There are multiple teaching and administration buildings, a gymnasium and storage sheds, across six titles to cut and carve to suit requirements.”

The Glossop school campus operated for 80 years from its opening in 1942 until its closure at the end of the 2021 academic year.

It was later used as a Rapid Antigen Test collection site for Riverland residents as part of the former Liberal government’s response to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The nearby Winkie Primary School in Glossop – built for children of the pioneering fruit growers who settled in the region after WWI – is also currently on the market.

Developers are being sought to acquire the 1.9ha site following the school’s closure in 2015. A $450,000 price tag has been set for the property on Winkie Rd.

Expressions of interest in the former Glossop High School campus close at 4pm on October 3.
