FRANK Lowy has undergone brain surgery following complications arising from his fall from the podium at the A-League Grand Final in May.
Mr Lowy, the founder of the shopping centre giant Westfield, underwent surgery in Europe for a subdural haematoma, a blood clot on the brain, last week after falling ill recently.
The injury was most likely a complication from the highly-publicised fall, the Westfield statement said.
The chairman of Westfield Corporation, Scentre Group, Football Federation of Australia and the Lowy Institute for International Policy is expected to make a full recovery, company representatives said.
The 84-year-old billionaire had been asked to present the A-League Grand Final trophy to the triumphant Melbourne Victory team when he lost his footing and fell backwards off the stage on to the ground below.
The accident stunned the capacity AAMI Park crowd.
But Lowy got to his feet and returned to the stage - drawing a huge raw from spectators.
He later left the field unassisted.
A statement from the FFA shortly afterward said Lowy had escaped serious injury:
“Mr Lowy received treatment from paramedics on the scene and was cleared of serious injury,’’ the statement read. “He has soreness in his shoulder from the fall, but is otherwise OK.’’
