Exclusive: An Aussie teen is quite literally putting the icing on the cake for parents trying to deliver that perfect Insta-worthy birthday party for their children.
At just 14, Blayz Meredith is offering made-to-order, designer birthday cakes at a fraction of the price by pairing the best home bakers with mum and dad clients.
The two-sided marketplace prevents buyers from having to spend hours searching online for a baker, and saves bakers from the hassle of creating cake quotes only to have sales fall through.
Now, the teen sensation hopes his game-changing Got Cakey app will capture a slice of a $59 billion global cake market.
“By connecting bakers with buyers, we’ve flipped the way people discover and order cakes,” Mr Meredith said.
“Buyers simply describe the sweet treat they’re looking for, set a budget, and watch the quotes roll in.
“It’s super simple, and you can easily compare quotes, look at a baker’s portfolio of previous cakes and reviews, and pick the best baker for the job.”
In Australia alone, the cake and pastry industry is worth $1.7 billion, according to IBISWorld.
Small Business Australia Executive Director Bill Lang said with the cost of living crush pushing Aussies towards side hustles, platforms like Got Cakey could be a way for people to make thousands of dollars in extra money.
“It is reflective of a changing world and access to technology that you no longer need a bricks and mortar business to supply product to the consumers and for entrepreneurs, whatever age, they can now market from anywhere to anyone,” Mr Lang said.
“With the squeeze on budgets, creating novel ways to generate income through a side hustle is one way to alleviate that pressure and there are many stories where a clever idea has generated substantial income.”
Mr Meredith’s mum and Got Cakey co-CEO Jay Curtin said Aussies could turn the baking job into a part-time or casual role or even a full time gig.
“Our average order value is $190, so if a baker can make one cake per day, every single day, that’s $69,350 a year,” Ms Curtin said.
“Or if they are making four cakes per day that’s $277,400 per year.”
After the app’s soft launch in January, which was downloaded double the amount anticipated, Got Cakey will be available around the country in June, followed by the UK later in the year.
Delivery of the cakes will also have to be arranged between the baker and customer, with future plans to have an Uber service in-built on the platform.
Got Cakey is looking for bakers anywhere in Australia to join their app and can be contacted via gotcakey.au.
