Aussie businesses can start selling from online marketplace Temu

Temu has made a major change for Australians, which could change the way customers use the app.

Forever 21 Was a Fast Fashion Pioneer. It Wasn’t Fast Enough.

Chinese marketplace Temu has opened the floodgates to thousands of Australian businesses allowing them to sell on their platform for the first time.

Businesses can now sell directly to millions of Australian consumers who use the platform famous for its cheap and affordable products.

Shoppers are also set to benefit from quicker deliveries rather than the 20-day turnaround it can take when items are purchased from China.

“For consumers, the addition of local sellers means they’ll be able to enjoy a broader selection from Australia-based sellers on Temu,” a spokesman said.

“Local businesses can now tap on Temu as a low-cost channel to connect with millions of shoppers, creating new opportunities to expand and reach new customers.”

The e-commerce platform is owned by Chinese company PDD Holdings, it originated in the US in 2022 and began operating in Australia the following year.

Temu has expanded local models in other markets including the US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, and South Korea.

Roy Morgan found 3.8m Australians aged over 14 had used the platform at least once in the 12 months to June 2024, spending $1.7b, with 65 per cent of its Australian customer base men.

Roy Morgan’s Head of Retail Research and Social & Consumer Trends Laura Demasi said the rise of these ultra cheap platforms had been extraordinary.

“These numbers confirm that the ‘trading down’ phenomenon is real,” she said.

“Every month more and more Australians – both young and old – are trading down to these platforms to stretch their dollars further, redirecting billions of dollars away from Australian retailers.”
