Xi Jinping vows ‘lasting greatness’ for China

Xi Jinping has vowed “lasting greatness for the Chinese nation” in a new propaganda video designed to boost the international image of the Communist Party.

Running for two minutes and 50 seconds – with a narrator speaking English – the video was revealed on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 20th Chinese Communist Party National Congress in Beijing.

The video shows striking natural scenery in China, along with horrific warlike images.

It features some of the party’s 96 million grassroots members from all walks of life – from teachers and welders to astronauts, a doctor from Wuhan who fought against Covid-19 and a chief engineer who designed China’s first generation of nuclear submarines.

A deep male voice says over the images: “Who am I? I’m not a born leader, I was once so weak ... I was not born to be invincible; All that I do is to keep training and fighting ... My name is the Communist Party of China”

The narrator adds: “Nothing can separate me from the 1.4 billion-plus Chinese people.

“I hold a firm belief that this country is its people; the people are the country.”

Qi Fabao, an army regiment commander injured while fighting in a border skirmish with India, says in the video: “I would rather die defending my country than back off for the sake of remaining alive.”

The video climaxes with the voice of Mr Xi, who is poised to secure a historic third term as general secretary of the CCP at the congress.

“Our party has dedicated itself to achieving lasting greatness for the Chinese nation and committed itself to the noble cause of peace and development for humanity,” says Mr Xi.

“Our responsibility is unmatched in importance, and our mission is glorious beyond compare.”

The video follows a similar move from the Chinese military. The People’s Liberation Army video twisted its abbreviation as “PLA – Peace Loving Army” and vowed to be “a staunch force in safeguarding world peace”.
