British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to marry his girlfriend Carrie Symonds, 10 Downing Street has announced, following the news that Ms Symonds is pregnant and due around June.

Ms Symonds, 31, posted on social media: “we’ve got a baby hatching early summer’’ and revealed that the couple had got engaged at the end of last year.

Mr Johnson, 55, had finalised his divorce from his second wife, Marina Wheeler, a barrister, several weeks ago.

The baby will be Ms Symond’s first child and Mr Johnson’s sixth known child.

The happy news was confirmed by an official spokesperson who said: “The Prime Minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer.”

The couple has been together since 2018.

Lord Liverpool, married again in 1822 after his wife Louisa died. He married Louisa’s life-long friend, Mary Chester.

The news that Mr Johnson is having another child has put the spotlight on his family — about which he is reticent to talk about. He has repeatedly refused to confirm how many children he has.

What is known is that he has four children with Ms Wheeler: Lara Lettice Johnson-Wheeler, 26, Milo Arthur Johnson, 24, a keen cricketer and linguist, Cassie Peaches Johnson, 22, and Theodore Apollo Johnson, 20.

Mr Johnson also had a daughter called Stephanie, born to art adviser Helen Macintyre in 2009.

Ms Symonds forged new ground when she became the first unmarried partner of a prime minister to live in Downing Street. She is thrilled about the wedding and the baby, a spokesperson said.

Ms Symonds has worked for various Conservative ministers and was head of broadcast at the Conservative campaign in 2015 election. She worked on Mr Johnson’s mayoral campaign in 2012. The couple went public with their relationship in mid 2019, but had been dating as far back as mid 2018. Mr Johnson and Ms Wheeler announced their separation in September 2018.
