A cruise ship with more than 3,000 passengers on board has been refused entry at two Caribbean ports over a “high number” of passengers with respiratory tract infections.

St Lucia and Dominica both barred the Aida Perla cruise ship from docking, but health officials said there was no suggestion of coronavirus on board.

The ship, owned by Carnival Cruise Line, was turned away first from St Lucia on Saturday before Dominica also refused it entry on Sunday.

Health officials from both islands said they had taken the decision “out of an abundance of caution for human health and safety.”

A Carnival cruise ship was last week put in lock down over a suspected case of coronavirus. The Costa Smeralda was held in the port of Civitavecchia after a 54-year-old Chinese national displayed symptoms which sparked concerns she had possibly contracted the deadly virus.

Carnival has written to all passengers warning that anyone who had been to China in the last two weeks would not be allowed to board any of their cruise ships.

In addition, it warned the Bahamian government would not allow passengers to disembark from any cruise ship that had visited China in the past 20 days.

“In accordance with guidance received from Cruise Lines International Association, and with the health and safety of guests and crew in mind, cruise lines, including ours, will also be implementing travel restrictions,” the company said in its letter. “Accordingly, all guests who have travelled to China in the last 14 days prior to their embarkation day will not be allowed to sail.

“The Bahamian government has also informed cruise lines that guests who have been to China in the last 20 days before their arrival date in the Bahamas will not be allowed to disembark in a Bahamian port of call”.
