Matildas captain Samantha Kerr called British police officers “f***ing stupid and white”, and threatened to upload footage of them on Twitter during an incident at Twickenham police station in south-west London, in the early hours of January 30 2023.

Kerr also refused to pay for damage to a London black cab, despite smashing the rear window, kicking in a safety divider and vomiting inside the vehicle, because she believed she was being kidnapped, a London court heard on Monday.

Kerr, 31 is charged with causing racially aggravated harassment to one officer, police constable Stephen Lovell, during the incident in the police station.

'Stupid and white': Sam Kerr to police

In footage played to the jury, taken from body cam of PC Lovell and another police officer at Twickenham station, Kerr, who was heavily inebriated can be heard claiming to have tried to call the police when in the cab, but that they had hung up on her.

When PC Lovell replied “They wouldn’t do that”, Kerr said: “Oh my God … Honestly, you guys are f****ing stupid and white,” before repeating: “You guys are f***ing stupid and white”.

She added “It’s the world’s f***ing problem”, as she expressed frustration with trying to call the police, not knowing the right number. She told the police that was because “we are international”.

The court also saw footage where Kerr looked at PC Lovell and said: “Honestly you guys are f***ing stupid and white’’ and “I am looking you in the eyes, I’m looking you in the eyes, you guys are f***ing stupid, I am over this shit’’.

Ms Kerr’s lawyer Grace Forbes told the court: “When you look past the headline and you look at the evidence, that Samantha Kerr did not feel hostile towards this officer because he is white. We saw comment, however poorly expressed, about positions of power and privilege and how those words might colour perception”.

Kerr was seen in the dock taking copious notes and at various points holding her head in her hands. Her parents, Roxanne and Roger and brother Levi, were also in court accompanied by a security guard.

The court heard how at one point in those early hours Kerr had shown the policeman her bank account balance to prove she could pay for the damage if she wanted to, which PC Lovell took to be her showing off her wealth, making him feel “belittled”.

The police call centre had told the taxi driver to take Kerr and Mewis to a police station after they had refused to pay for vomiting in his cab.

However the women believed they were being kidnapped and demanded the police charge the driver.

Several times Kerr referred to the case of Sarah Everard, a woman who was kidnapped and killed by a police officer while walking home at Clapham Junction in March 2021.

She had told the police: “This is racial f***ing thing, you are not letting me go over 60 pounds?’’

Kerr said she wasn’t going to pay for the damage to the cab. “ I am not going to pay for some dodgy c***’s f***ing window’’.

She added: I’ll get the f***ing Chelsea lawyers on to this, I am not taking the f***ing brunt on this.”

Kerr also said she would upload footage from inside the police station onto Twitter.

“I am going to f***ing post this shot on twitter,’’ she said.

At around 2.20am on Monday, police had seen glass on the road about 50m from the police station and witnessed Kerr climbing out of the broken back window of the black taxi which had stopped near the police station.

PC Lovell said he took the couple inside the station so they could talk to him away from the driver.

PC Lovell said that according to the control room, only one call had been made to the police and that call had been made by the taxi driver.

After Kerr and Mewis had been cautioned and arrested for criminal damage, and Ms Kerr for racially aggravated public order, the two footballers agreed to pay for the damage to the cab and were allowed to leave.

Kerr returned to the station at 10.30pm the following night to volunteer to make a further statement about the racial aggravation charge.

The court heard that during that interview Kerr denied intent to cause the police officer any harassment, alarm or distress saying: “I was just angry at how I felt’’.

When asked if she was aware that her words could be perceived as racist Ms Kerr replied: “I am aware that anything can be perceived as racist for sure”. She accepted responsibility for a public order matter.

The case continues.
