Sarah Ferguson diagnosed with skin cancer
The Royals are rocked with another health scare, with Prince Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah, the Duchess of York, diagnosed with a malignant melanoma.
The Royal family has been rocked with yet another health scare, with Prince Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah, the Duchess of York, diagnosed with a malignant melanoma.
Sarah, also known as Fergie, is also recovering from breast cancer, and was told of the cancerous mole shortly after making a surprise appearance at the Royals walk to Christmas church service on Christmas Day at Sandringham.
She is currently in Austria having further tests. The news comes just days after Catherine, the Princess of Wales, underwent abdominal surgery in London on Tuesday and King Charles will have surgery on an enlarged prostate this week. Catherine, 42, is still recovering from the surgery at the London Clinic in Marylebone and is expected to be off work until April.
Charles, 75, has cancelled all engagements until his surgery but is expected to return to light duties within several weeks.
Sarah was said to be in good spirits but finding the second cancer diagnosis within six months as “distressing”.
The alarm was raised when Sarah, 64, was having reconstructive breast surgery last year and doctors removed several moles. One has been diagnosed as being malignant.
A spokesman for the Duchess said “Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma.
“Her dermatologist asked that several moles were removed and analysed at the same time as the Duchess was undergoing reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy, and one of these has been identified as cancerous.
“She is undergoing further investigations to ensure that this has been caught in the early stages.
“Clearly, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer has been distressing but the Duchess remains in good spirits.
“The Duchess wants to thank the entire medical team which has supported her, particularly her dermatologist whose vigilance ensured the illness was detected when it was.
“She believes her experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, colour and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma.”
Sarah was last seen in public on Christmas Day when she joined the rest of the family walking to St Mary Magdalene’s church, the first time welcomed back into the royal’s inner sanctum since 1991.
She had been cast adrift after a major falling out with Prince Philip and her divorce with Prince Andrew.
However she has continued to live in Royal Lodge on the Windsor Estate with her ex-husband and has been a steadfast supporter of his during the turmoil surrounding his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
