Moon landing: newspaper front pages
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first manned moon landing, step back in time and see how the press covered the historic event.
Il Messaggero of Rome. The headline translates literally to “Moon first step”.
The Australian dated July 21, 1969 was being thrown over suburban fences around the nation at 6.17am AEST when Armstrong took his first steps on the moon. And so it was on July 22 that our readers got their first pictures of the astronauts on the lunar surface.
They did it! Brisbane’s The Courier-Mail.
The Herald of Melbourne.
The Washington Post.
Russia’s Pravda. The article featured an interview with academician A.P. Vinogradov which, roughly translated, included the following statements:
“We highly appreciate the flight of the American spaceship “Apollo-11”, in which two people - Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin first set foot on the lunar surface. Spaceship and its many systems withstood a serious challenge. One can do nothing but admire the courage and self-possession of cosmonauts, who bravely met the unknown. I take this opportunity to congratulate the astronauts with outstanding success and wish them a safe return to Earth.”
