Meghan Markle has claimed she was compelled to carry out an official royal function in South Africa soon after discovering that there had been a fire in baby Archie’s bedroom.

Archie, then just four and a half months old, had been with their nanny, only known as Lauren, who had gone downstairs to make a snack, with the baby attached to her in a sling, at the time of the small fire in their accommodation in South Africa.

In the first interview of her $18 million Spotify podcast deal, Meghan talks to tennis great Serena Williams about female empowerment and reveals that she and Prince Harry had been at an engagement on the first day of the tour at the Nyanga township when they were told there had been a fire.

Meghan, 41, recounted: “In that amount of time that she (the nanny) went downstairs (for a snack), the heater in the nursery caught on fire. There was no smoke detector. Someone happened to just smell smoke down the hallway, went in, fire extinguished. He was supposed to be sleeping in there.

“There was this moment where I’m standing on a tree stump and I’m giving this speech to women and girls, and we finish the engagement, we get in the car and they say there’s been a fire at the residence. What? There’s been a fire in the baby’s room. We came back. And, of course, as a mother, you go, ‘Oh, my God, what?’ Everyone’s in tears, everyone’s shaken. And what do we have to do? Go out and do another official engagement? I said, ‘This doesn’t make any sense.’”

Meghan said she had wanted people to know what had happened.

“I was like: can you just tell people what happened? And so much, I think, optically, the focus ends up being on how it looks instead of how it feels,’’ she said.

“And part of the humanising and the breaking through of these labels and these archetypes and these boxes that we’re put into is having some understanding on the human moments behind the scenes that people might not have any awareness of and to give each other a break.

“Because we did – we had to leave our baby. And even though we were being moved to another place afterwards, we still had to leave him and go do another official engagement.”

Towards the end of that tour in October 2019, Meghan told ITV interviewer Tom Bradby: “Not many people have asked if I’m okay.”
