Lion Air flight bound for Japan crashes after take off in Manila

A Lion Air flight carrying eight passengers including foreign nationals bound for Japan has crashed after take off in the Philippines.

A Lion Air flight bound for Japan has burst into flames just after take off in the Philippines.

Shortly after 8pm (GMT+8), Lion Air chartered plane RPC 5880 carrying eight passengers and medical supplies bound for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport burst into flames shortly after taking off from Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.

The passengers on board consisted of a flight medic, nurse, doctor, three flight crew and an American and Canadian passenger.

After the explosion on NAIA runway 24, Red Cross Philippines dispatched one fire truck with seven crew members and two ambulances with several members to contain the blast and attend to casualties.

A statement from the Manialla International Airport Authority confirmed no passengers had survived the crash.

“Unfortunately, no passenger survived the accident,” it read.
