In depth: Early hours of the October 7 massacre

When Hamas set out to kill as many Jews as possible on October 7, 2023, they hit more than 25 sites in Israel by land, sea and air.

The video above shows how it unfolded.

In the early hours of Saturday, October 7, mostly young Israelis revelled in the desert, under the moonlight and through to sunrise. The Supernova festivalgoers danced in the open air to psychedelic trance music to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.

How Hamas broke into Israel

Meanwhile, terrorists from Hamas, an Arab acronym for Islamic Resistance Movement, were breaking through the fence at the Kerem Shalom crossing, a checkpoint between Gaza and Israel. Hamas released footage of this.

At the same time, they breached the Erez crossing, north of Gaza.

At 6:30, the sound of rockets and sirens

At around 6:30am, the festivalgoers at Supernova noticed rockets in the sky.

Not long after, the music turned off and a siren warned of an incoming attack. The event organisers told everyone to flee.

The sound of rockets and a siren, an automated message saying tzeva adom, Hebrew for colour red, boomed through Kibbutzim near the border, like Be’eri, Kfar Aza and Nir Oz.

At Nir Oz, security cameras spot vehicles approaching the community’s gates at high speed. Within seconds, gunmen open fire on the guard station and armed militants enter the kibbutz.

At the same time, Israel was attacked by sea, north of Gaza.

Motorboats can be seen approaching Zikim, a Kibbutz with a naval base, just before 7am. The terrorists stormed an Israeli army training base full of recruits who had only been in the army for four weeks.

By 7am, attackers, Hamas terrorists, reached the festival. Everyone was trying to flee. Some never made it past the tents.

Others hid in cars, bins, and bushes.

This was all happening 5km from Gaza near the kibbutz of Re’im, an agricultural community.

Hamas attack by sea in Zikim

While terrorists are slaughtering people at the festival, and approaching by sea in Zikim, they are moving into Be’eri, a kibbutz of over 1000 citizens. Just before 7am, these two men dressed as soldiers approach the community’s gate. One smashes the window of the guard room and steps inside. Then a car drives up, and they shoot the two young people inside.

Now, the two men were inside of the kibbutz. By 7am, there were at least eight armed men in the community.

At eleven minutes past seven, militants enter on their motorbikes.

This Kibbutz is divided into smaller communities, with one dedicated for older residents. That’s where the terrorists went first.

The only Australian to die in the attack, grandmother Galit Carbone, was found dead, metres from her home in Be’eri. Her death wasn’t confirmed until four days later.

Meanwhile, in Nir Oz, the terrorists broke into the homes of Israelis.

Throughout the day, they pulled mothers and babies out of the house, and took them hostage. If they weren’t killed. The Australian has spoken to the family Shiri Bibas, held hostage by Hamas with her children four-year-old Ariel and 9-month-old Kfir.

85-year-old grandmother Yocheved Lifshitz was taken by Hamas terrorists and held hostage for 17 days.

Be’eri became one of the worst massacre sites.

Just 3km from the border with the Gaza Strip, about 70 Hamas militants descended on the Kfar Aza kibbutz.

Hamas attacked an Israeli gun tower just outside of the Kibbutz, and used drones to attack the Israeli Defence forces protecting the Kibbutz.

Up to 100 of its 400 residenbts are either killed or taken hostage, including a large number of children.

It takes the Israeli Defence Force 12 hours to get to the kibbutz, and 48 hours to regain control.

When they eventually assume control, officers are confronted by some of the most brutal and harrowing scenes of the war so far.

At 8:30am, two hours after the attacks began, the Minister of Defence of Israel Yoav gallant, addresses the nation.

At 10:46, Israel announced it would start to strike targets in Gaza.

Five hours after the attack starts, Prime Minister Netanyahu addresses the nation.

By midday, the festival site was still not secured. Terrorists ransacked the possessions of executed Israelis.

At 20 minutes past midday, emergency-alert chief sent a message to the remaining Be’eri kibbutz residents to say the army had arrived and was fighting with Hamas at the community entrance.

Ten hours after the attacks began, and almost four hours after the army arrived, fighting still raged in Be’eri.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation.
