The sheer wild irresponsibility of the Manhattan District Attorney in bringing criminal charges against Donald Trump became evident when the detail of the charges was finally revealed.

This is such an obvious and outrageous abuse of process that it probably increases the chances that Trump becomes the Republican presidential nominee in 2024.

That’s what Democrats want. Because they think the revulsion of independent voters for Trump will ensure his defeat.

But they are playing with fire.

If Trump is the candidate, especially against a cognitively challenged Joe Biden, who will be nearly 82 by the time of the campaign, it is by no means certain Trump would lose.

Elections are dynamic and inherently unpredictable.

Trump’s defiant rally was not quite vintage Trump. It was higher energy than his election announcement rally but still had a tone if woe about it.

And inevitably it was focused on Trump himself rather than the issues he might run on.

But this prosecution is so manifestly unjustified that even anti-Trump Republicans will feel they have to rally round the former president.

No one need doubt Trump’s many faults. But partisan Democrats have been guilty of the very abuses they accuse Trump of.

They are misusing the legal system. They invented swags of baseless conspiracies of Russian collusion by Trump. They suppressed the legitimate news of the Hunter Biden laptop, which seemed to show the President’s son committing actual crimes, and which certainly disclosed extremely disturbing patterns of financial benefits for the Biden family from states such as China.

They even recruited dozens of former intelligence officials to say they thought everything on the laptop was Russian disinformation. Of course it was nothing of the kind. This sequence of events gravely discredited what should be the non-partisan business of intelligence.

The bottom line is that Democrats have been almost as guilty as Trump in abusing American institutions and eroding faith in American democracy. Now they are actively eroding faith in American justice.

Trump’s challenge to American norms should be dealt with politically, by defeating him in elections, in Republican primaries and in general elections.

As things stand, the Democrats are playing a co-equal role in debauching democracy. Trump may even benefit in the short term, but in the long term America is the loser – as is the world which relies on it.
