Canada has thrown open its arms to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and millions have welcomed the prospect of a permanent royal presence.

Residents of big cities are eager to see where the couple chooses to settle, and Vancouver and Toronto, where Meghan lived while filming Suits, are the early favourites.

The couple went undetected on Vancouver Island for weeks over Christmas. Last week, the duchess arrived on a £ 134 ($252) flight from Vancouver and evaded media crews.

Canada has long been a favourite corner of the Commonwealth for royals who feel they can be themselves. The Duke of Windsor owned a ranch in Alberta, and in 1987 the Duke and Duchess of York spent three weeks canoeing along the Thelon River in the Northwest Territories.

Apart from a few mumblings from republican groups and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, most Canadians have welcomed the couple. Last week, a poll suggested that six out of 10 citizens were in favour of the duke becoming the governor-general of Canada, the Queen’s official representative. “Out of every country in the world, they like us best,” wrote a columnist in The Globe and Mail under the headline: “Harry and Meghan coming to Canada is the fairy-tale ending we all deserve.”
