WHAT IS IT? A state-of-the-art pair of thermal binoculars.

SO THEY KEEP YOUR HANDS AND EYEBALLS WARM? NICE! Don’t be daft. It means they can “see” at night – they detect infrared (heat) and cleverly convert it into an image. But that’s not all.

GO ON... As well as thermal imaging, these “multi spectrum” binos also offer traditional night vision (which works by amplifying ambient light from the moon and stars) and regular optical vision during the day.

WHAT DO YOU NEED BINOCULARS AT NIGHT FOR, ANYWAY? YOU’RE NOT A PERVERT, ARE YOU? Perish the thought, no! Possible uses include hunting, search-and-rescue, special ops, and, um, birdwatching in the pitch dark.

ANYTHING ELSE? They incorporate image stabilisation software, a laser range-finder (up to 1000m) and a digital zoom of up to 22x. You can record on them too.

I’VE JUST SEEN THE PRICE. CRIKEY! Yes. But there’s an alternative that won’t cost a thing: simply stand closer to the thing you wish to view, with a torch. #lifehack
