Wimbledon set to scrap 'outdated' tradition

Wimbledon’s honour boards are set to be replaced ahead of the 2022 grand slam tournament, withdrawing titles before the names of its female champions.

Since the tournaments began in 1884, female champions would have “Miss” and “Mrs” in front of their names while the men didn’t.

The change comes in an attempt to “move with the times” and disconnect the tournament from “such outdated and insulting styling”.

Since the tournament commenced female champions had their names attached to their husbands.

Australian tennis legend Evonne Goolagong Cawley, who won Wimbledon in 1980, was written “Mrs R Cawley” because her husband’s name is Roger.

Similarly, American tennis icon Billie Jean King is listed on Wimbledon’s honours boards as “Mrs. L.W. King” despite her divorce to Larry King in 1987.

The move comes after the prestigious event was stripped of ranking points in response to the decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament.
